Yellowstone closes after 'unprecedented' rain washes out roads

Some roads have been flooded and others are covered in mud or rocks

HELENA, Mont. — The National Park Service announced on Monday that all entrances to Yellowstone National Park have been closed because of "unprecedented" rain that has caused "substantial flooding, rockslides, and mudslides on roadways."

The park service says that some roads have been washed away and others are filled with mud or rocks. Officials say that power has been cut off in several parts of the park.

"Record flooding," said the head of the park, Cam Sholly

On the weekend, temperatures that were almost as high as records melted snow at high elevations, which led to the flooding. Rivers are at their highest point right now, but they are expected to go down in the next few days.

The park service didn't say when Yellowstone would reopen, but they did say that officials need time to figure out how bad the damage is and wait for things to get back to normal.

At least until Wednesday, the road will be closed. The park service warned that a lot of roads could be closed "for a long time."

The huge national park is made up of 2,219,789 acres, most of which are in Wyoming but some are also in Montana and Idaho, which are close by. Summer is when most people visit the park.
